This district has been considered as second Varanasi due to the presence of large number of temple from ancient age that’s why it is also considered as the temple town. This district has also a good reputation and well known for its different types of hand works. It is also known as sonepur. This district has a good amount of natural resources.

HISTORY:-
 This district earned the name “Subarnapur” during the time of Somavamsi ruler. The district was established in 1993.                                                            
                                                                             The chronological history of Subarnapur district can be dated from 8th century AD, when it was known as Swarnapur and was a part of Khinjali Mandal, ruled by the Bhanjas as the feudatory of the Bhaumakaras of Toshali. The District was ruled by many dynasties from its past.
 Subarnapur District has got many historical places and temples which describe history very well; all you need to do is to recognise them. So here are some temples.
                                                                                         Sashisena Temple, Pancharatha Temple, Budhima Temple, Gundicha Temple, Rameswar Temple, Suvarnameru Temple, Paschim Somanath Temple, Sureswari Temple, Khambeswari Temple, Bhagabati Temple and Lankeshwari Temple are the famous and historical temples of the Subarnapur District.        

DEMOGRAPHY:-
                                      According to 2011 census, population of Subarnapur district is 610,183 which were 541,835 in 2001 census. Literacy rate of the district is 74.42%. Sex ratio of the district is 960 females per 1000 males. This district has a population density of 261 inhabitants per square kilometre.
CULTURE:-
              Subarnapur is a rich cultural heritage district. Subarnapur is known for various things like textile and terracotta of Subarnapur, brass metal and Philigri crafts of Tarbha and Binka. Stone craving of Ulunda is known all over the state. Subarnapur is famous for Danda nata, it is a folk dance.
PLACE TO VISIT:-
              As it is considered as the temple town, so there are many places in Subarnapur you can visit,
Binica’s papakshya ghata:- This place is a famous tourist place in sundargarh district. It is believed that king Ananga Bhimadev got cured from leprosy after taking bath here.
Charda:- It is situated 4k.m from Binica. It is famous for Kapileswar temple.
Nabagraha kunda:- It is famous for the stone image of Nabagraha carved on a big stone.
Patali srikhetra:-
 This place has a religious importance towards the people of Odisha. It is located in the foot of trikut hill at kotsamalai of Biramaharajpur. It is believed that idols of lord Jagannath, lord Balabhadra and maa Subhadra were kept in the caves of trikut for 144 years.
                        According to Madalapanji, during the invasion of raktabahu, a king named sovandev of Odisha escaped with the idols of the three deities and buried the idols in kosal tract. After 144 years, a king named Jajati Keshari of Somavanshi dynasty found the idols and made them new. He made a temple in puri and enshrined the idols, which is now popularly known as Sri Khetra.
Now I’m going to tell you about a factor subarnapur is famous for.This is not a place but you can collect some from this beautiful region. I’m saying about the sonpuri sarees. The sarees are a type of identity of the district.
