The District is endowed with mountainous ranges, fascinating meadows, roaring streams, beautiful waterfalls, enchanting valleys, and forests with long trees and thick bushes. These are the manifestations of nature in all her embodiments.

This district of Odisha is mainly known as the tribal district. This district is a combination of natural beauty as well as the loveliness of the tribal people. Local inhabitants of this district are known as Adivasis which according to them means original inhabitant of the region. 

This part of Odisha used to be under thick forest. Nearly every Sunday local people come to a predetermined place to sell their products. These predetermined places are known as “HATAS” and the products being sold there are organic products. In the month of November (2nd to 3rd week) a special tribal festival is being observed by the Adivasis and organized by the district administration. The festival is known as DONGAR FESTIVAL or PARAB. The purpose of the festival is to showcase the lifestyle of the Adivasis. Many foreigners come to see the distinct occasion and want to be witnessed of the occasion…..

HISTORY

Koraput was in united form of Koraput, Rayagada, Malkangiri and Nabrangpur before 1.10.1992. There are many facts regarding the naming of Koraput. One such fact was mentioned by Mr. R.C.S Bell, the first district magistrate, and collector of Koraput. According to his statement, Koraput means the hamlet of nux-vomica. His statement suggests that there was a period when the tree of nux-vomica was prominent in this part. His statement is not so convincing because today there is not a single tree of nux-vomica in this district. In the time of the Zamindars, this region had great importance.

GEOGRAPHY

Koraput is located between 200 3’ and 170 50’ North latitudes and 810 27’ and 840 1’ East longitudes. The district of Koraput is spread over 8379 sq. Km. The average elevation of the district is 2900 ft. The district has got two sub-divisions Koraput and Jeypore. There are 14 tehsils, 14 blocks only one municipality, 3 NACs, 23 police stations, 2028 villages, and 226-gram panchayats functioning in the district of Koraput.

The minimum temperature of the district is 12.0 Celsius and 38.0 is the maximum. Mainly three seasons can be felt ex. summer, rainy, Winter. Summer from April to June, Rain from June to October, and winter from November to March. The average rainfall of the district is 1522 mm.

ECONOMY

Agriculture and forestry are the mainstream for the economy of the district, mainly agriculture because 83% of the population of the district depends upon agriculture. The second reason is the conditions are suitable for agriculture. The common annual food crops grown in the district are paddy, millet, Maize, etc.

In Koraput, there are two big industries, which are contributing to the economy of the district. The first one is the industry of HAL (Hindustan Aeronautics Limited.). HAL is the defense wing of the Indian government. An engine manufacturing unit is settled 10 km from Koraput. This manufacturing unit manufactures the engines of MIG and SUKHOI fighter aircraft.

The second industry is also from the government of India. NALCO (National Aluminium Corporation) is an Aluminium manufacturing unit. In both industries, many engineers and technicians are appointed.

DEMOGRAPHY

According to the 2011 census, the population of the district is 1,376,934. Of which male and female are 677,864 and 699,070 respectively. The proportion of the district’s population to the state population is 3.28%. The population growth rate over the decade 2001 to 2011 is 16.63 as compared to the 14.67 growth rate of the previous decade. Also, the increment in the population density has also been noticeable, which is 156 in 2011 while that number was 134 in 2001.

Increment in the literacy rate is also there; in 2001 literacy rate was 35.72% while according to the recent records of 2011 that rate is 49.87. According to the 2011 census, the data sex ratio is 1031 per 1000 males which was 999 in the 2001 census.

TOURISM

There are many scenic places in this district to visit, some of them are, the majestic waterfall of Duduma, Lord Shiva’s Gupteshwar cave, and the antiquity of the Palace in Nandapur.

1- Duduma- This place is situated at a distance of 65kms from Jeypore. This place is famous for its magnificent waterfall. This place is known as Macchyatirtha. A few kilometers from Duduma A village called Ankadeli draws attention because of a market, A market in which the primitive tribe Bonda’s come from a remote inaccessible places to sell their product. Near the waterfall, a place called Jolaput is known for the dam reservoir.

2- Nandapur: - Nandapur was the ancient capital of Jeypore. The main attraction is the antiquity of the objects that are kept over here. A 1.8-meter image of Ganapati tells the antiquity.

3- Gupteshwar:- On the bank of river Kolab surrounded by the natural scenery cave shrine of lord Shiva is present. The sacred Lingam called Gupteshwar literally means the hidden god. Shivaratri is the major festival.
