GANJAM

 
Ganjam district is named after the Old Township and European fort of Ganjam. The name Ganjam comes from the word Gan-i-aam which means Granary of the World. Ganjam is one of the most populous districts of Odisha and a under developed district having twenty-two blocks and three sub-divisions. There are 22 blocks, 475 Grampanchayats, 18 Urban Local bodies, 3229 villages, 29 Police Stations and 13 Assembly Constituencies.

It is spreading over the geographical area of 8070.60 square km. in Odisha. It is situated in the coastal region of the state and shares its boundary with Andhra Pradesh State. Gifted with water resources, forests, flora and fauna, and other natural resources the district put on view its richness in various areas

DISTRICT AT A GLANCE:-

Handicraft and Cottage Industries: The district has own international reputation for its cottage industries and handicrafts. The main crafts are Brass, appliqué, bamboo craft, stone carving, wood carving, terracotta, textile toys etc. and thousands of artisans are operating individually and through co-operative societies.

Occupation: Cultivation is one of the major occupational labor forces of the district, which has engaged approximately 75% of the total workers of the district. Livestock, Forestry, Fishing, Mining, Construction, Trading and Transport are few of the work-related categories being the source of income for another 22% workers. The major crops grown in the district are paddy, groundnut, cotton, sugarcane and green vegetables.

 

The district has a prosperous live stock population and potentially very much rich in inland and brackish water fisheries. The Chilika coastal area and extended sea shore are the source of rich marine products in the district and serves for the production of like shells, salt.

Forest Resources: Total forest area of the district is around 28% of the total geographical area.



 Bamboo, Sal seed and Kendu leaf (nationalized product), called green gold of Odisha are the main forest products besides bamboo, myrobalan, mahua, resin, neem, and karanja seeds etc.

Land Resources : Ganjam district has total geographical area of 8070.6 Sq. Kilometers. The costal area of the district extends over 60 kilometers. So far as the river system is concerned, rivers like Rushikulya, Dhanei, Bahuda, Ghoda Hada play major role in agriculture and power sectors of the district.

 

 

Important Places

Berhampur : It is a great shopping centre for silk sarees and handicrafts.The main visiting places are Jagannath Temple ,Satyanarayan temple ,Budhi Thakurani, Berhampur University and Medical College.

Narayani
: It is situated at a distance of 80 km. from Berhampur.The temple of Goddess Narayani surrounded by captivating natural scenery is situated on a hill top.

Nirmaljhar : It is situated at a distance of 65 km. from Berhampur i.e in khallikote near kairasi.It is a beautiful place comprising a complex of temples dedicated to Lord Siva, Radhakrusna,Vimala,Dadhibamana, and a perinnial stream forming a pool of crystal clear water.

Tara-Tarini : It is situated on Taratirini hill near Purusottampur which is at a distance of 40 km. from Berhampur. Twin Goddess Tara and tarini are worshiped in the temple on the top of a hill. River Rushikulya flows at the foot of the hill.

Gopalpur- On- Sea : This sleepy resort in Ganjam district with its deep sea was once an ancient sea port.It is 16 km. from Berhampur, having all sorts of tourist facilities.

Jaugarh : It is situated at a distance of 35 km. from Berhampur, is famous for Ashokan Rock Edicts and other archaeological remains.

Panchama : It is famous for its stone image of Lord Ganesh.

Mantridi : It is the small village in Gajam district which is famous for the temple dedicated to Goddess Siddha Vairabi.

Budhakhol : This picturesque hill is situated at the distance of 3 kms. from Buguda, Tahasil. The temple of the Lord Siva and a natural spring attracts the pilgrims.

Byaghra Devi : It is situated near Kullad of Bhanjanagar town. It is picturesque  spot and is famous for the temple of Goddess Byaghra Devi.
